Alexei Pepelyayev was born in Barnaul. Alexei began his professional career in the 2000s with Novokuznetsk Metallurg. Playing for Khanty-Mansiysk's Yugra, he won the Bratina twice. In the KHL, Alexei Pepelyayev played for Yugra, Nizhny Novgorod's Torpedo, and the capital's Spartak and Dynamo. He spent his final season as a player in the VHL in Tashkent's Humo.
Alexei began his coaching career at the Dynamo Hockey School (Moscow). In the VHL, he worked on the staff of Voronezh's Buran.
