Amur: Focusing on Russians, a Sensational Win Over the Champion

Amur began the 2026–27 season without any foreign players; for the first time in years, management decided to rely entirely on Russian hockey players. Alexander Andrievsky took charge of the team, with Pavel Desyatkov appointed as senior coach to assist him.

The offseason brought a major roster overhaul. Moving to Khabarovsk were two-time Stanley Cup winner Vyacheslav Voynov, defenseman Alexei Vasilevsky (from Salavat Yulaev), CSKA forward Vitaly Abramov, Avangard sharpshooter Kirill Pilipenko, and Yaroslav Likhachyov – who had spent the previous season in Khabarovsk on loan from Lokomotiv and finished as the team's top scorer (39 points). The goaltending corps was bolstered by Alexander Trushkov from Lada; he is expected to share the workload with Maxim Dorozhko, who played a phenomenal 59 games last season.

The start of the championship was uneven: after seven games, Amur had just 5 points and sat in 9th place in the Eastern Conference. The team has not been scoring much so far – 11 goals in 7 games. However, on September 25, the Khabarovsk squad pulled off a sensation by defeating the reigning Gagarin Cup champions, Yaroslavl’s Lokomotiv, 3–1, scoring three goals in the third period. Danil Yurtaikin, Kirill Pilipenko, and Kirill Urakov found the back of the net – marking Amur's first home victory over Lokomotiv since 2019.

Three former Neftekhimik players on the Amur roster, and one former Amur player on ours
The game is made all the more intriguing by the presence of players familiar with both teams. Amur’s roster features three former Neftekhimik players: forward Alexander Dergachyov, who transferred from Nizhnekamsk this summer; and Danil Yurtaikin, who moved to Khabarovsk via a trade – Amur sent Matvei Zaseda to Neftekhimik in exchange for him. Yurtaikin is already scoring for Amur, including the game-winning goal against Lokomotiv.

Kirill Urakov, a 28-year-old forward, also previously played for Neftekhimik; he scored the third – and decisive – goal in the game against Lokomotiv.

Neftekhimik have started the season strongly and currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference. However, a road trip to Khabarovsk is always a challenge, involving a significant time difference, a long flight, and the fervent support of the Platinum Arena crowd.

Direct rivals for a playoff spot
Amur and Neftekhimik are traditional rivals in the race for an Eastern Conference playoff berth. In the 2019–20 season, the head–to–head battle between these teams determined who would make the Gagarin Cup playoffs: the "Wolves" went on a phenomenal run, beating Amur 8–0 in Khabarovsk and edging out the Far East team by two points. A similar scenario played out in subsequent seasons.

Head–to–Head
Over the course of their KHL rivalry, the teams have played 51 games: Neftekhimik has 28 wins and Amur has 23, with a goal differential of 139–134 in favor of the Nizhnekamsk side.

However, the momentum has recently shifted entirely to the Khabarovsk team: Amur has won the last six head-to-head games in a row – an unprecedented streak in this rivalry.
