In the first period, Salavat Yulaev was the more active team on ice. For the most part, Salavat Yulaev had the puck posession, with Neftekhimik limited to a breakaway chance after Matthew Maggio’s mistake enabled Rafael Bikmullin and Damir Zhafyarov to get an odd–man rush.
It was not long before Salavat Yulaev scored first goal of the game. A few shifts later, Alexander Zharovsky thought he had doubled the lead but a bench challenge showed he was offside and the goal was disallowed.
